What Do We Choose?
// February 10th, 2010 // Blogging
It’s quite cold outside and it’s been a heavy, rainy day. I haven’t seen the sun today, at all. I kept my window blinds shut. I could have opened them, but I didn’t. I just didn’t see the point. No light would come into the room, after all.
Despite this day being quite heavy – and frankly suitable for studying and cocooning – I believe that the sun will come out tomorrow, and the day after, and I will widely open the blinds. I choose to believe in the prospect of a better – or at least more sunny – day.
But what do we choose in our lives?
When the “rainy”, “darkened” days strike us down, don’t we choose to turn within? Don’t we hide in our little “rooms” with our “window blinds” completely shut to the world? Do we at least choose to keep the faith that the “sun” will shine again?
Some – we call them optimists – may choose to make good use of the “dark” days, to rest. To refill their batteries, even to evaluate their situation. They get out of the experience wiser and more ready, because their positive attitude fills them with inner piece and their thoughts are composed and collected, leading to better choices and actions.
What we choose to believe in and how we choose to act or react cannot, by definition, be far apart.
The rain gets stronger, and the wind howls through the alleys… I won’t get grumpy tonight. I will finish the post here, and open up my window. I’ll peer through the window blinds and choose to enjoy the sound of rain and wind…
In the end, it’s all a matter of choice.
If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise.
